Codeine is a narcotic analgesic occurring naturally in opium. It can also be synthesized from morphine, but it is only 10 percent as potent as morphine. It is used to treat mild to moderate pain, but its primary use is as a cough suppressant.
Codeine is not a major drug of abuse because of its weak effects, but nevertheless continued use can quickly result in psychological dependence.
Use of codeine, like any narcotic drug, is very dangerous. It may be a relatively weak narcotic, but it can kill you outright.
